Capital One Financial Corp. (COF.N) announced Monday that the personal information of about 100 million people in the U.S. and six million in Canada were compromised in a security breach.
The U.S. company also said that, in some cases, the hacker obtained social insurance and bank account numbers, while approximately one million Social Insurance Numbers were compromised among its Canadian credit card customers.
Here’s a look at just how big the presence of Capital One – one of North America’s largest credit card issuers – is in Canada:
- Capital One Canada is part of the banking division of McLean, V.A.-based Capital One Financial. Its Canadian offices are located in Toronto, Kitchener-Waterloo, Ont. and Montreal.
- Capital One Canada has offered Canadians a range of Mastercard credit cards since 1996. Today, its credit card products include a number of low rate, cash-back and travel rewards Mastercards.
- Since 2015, Capital One has offered a co-branded, cash-back Mastercard exclusively for Costco Wholesale Corp.’s Canadian members, after the retailer’s contract with American Express Co. ended. Costco has 100 locations in nine Canadian provinces, according to its website.
- Capital One Canada also has a partnership with Hudson’s Bay Co., in which credit for the Canadian retailer and SaksFirst’s cardholders are extended by Capital One Canada.
- Capital One Canada has approximately 1,300 employees in the country.
