(Bloomberg) -- UK vaccine advisers recommended a new round of Covid-19 boosters for elderly and vulnerable people in the autumn, saying the pandemic’s threat could mount again as winter approaches.

Another shot should be offered to those 65 and older, care-home residents and staff, frontline health and social-care workers, as well as people ages 16 to 64 who are in a clinical risk group, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization said.

The new campaign would follow a spring round of boosters that have been offered to a more limited population, including those 75 and older.

The move comes as the spread of the coronavirus has eased in the UK in recent weeks, though new variants could emerge and studies have shown that protection from vaccination wanes with time.

The committee said it will announce final plans for the autumn program at a later date.
