Bombardier (BBDb.TO) Chief Executive Alain Bellemare said he thinks it’s too early to tell if U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will have a negative impact on the train and plane maker.  

In an interview on BNN, Bellemare said his firm will not openly speculate on whether new policies will be enacted by the U.S. to raise barriers on foreign manufacturers, but said Trump could be a boon to the business jet market.

“It will take time for them to decide their new policy on trade, immigration and tax. I don’t see any short-term impact,” he said. “Could there be some challenges? Maybe, but at this stage it’s way too early to speculate.”

Bellemare said the global nature of the aircraft industry means it’s unlikely Trump would engage in a pointed tariff battle to protect Washington-state based Boeing.

“Boeing is also selling aircraft everywhere around the world, the same way that we do,” he said. “We are operating in aerospace on a very global scale and I don’t see much changes coming in the near, medium or long run.”

Trump’s pro-business stance could help bolster the planemaker’s business jet segment, which has been under pronounced pressure in recent years due to flagging demand in the wake of the financial crisis, Bellemare said.

“We would applaud a pro-business, pro-growth agenda,” he said. “Anything that would stimulate the U.S. economy and would help stimulate the world economy would be good, and especially good for our business aircraft.”
