Mining industry leader Sandvik announced a major investment Friday, committing $85 million to build a manufacturing facility in Sudbury, Ont.
The announcement included a ground-breaking ceremony, as well as a $4 million contribution from the provincial Invest Ontario Fund.
“It’s a historic announcement for our city,” said Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre.

“(It’s) one of the largest private-sector investments in the City of Greater Sudbury in decades. So we’re super excited.”
The 135,000-square-foot facility will be built on 115 acres at 2555 Maley Dr. in New Sudbury, replacing Sandvik’s current location in Lively.
“For us, it’s the centre of the activity in mining, certainly in nickel,” said Peter Corcoran, Sandvik Mining’s vice-president of sales.
“And, as we know, there’s a lot of new mines coming up in the Ontario province, so we’re happy to be here for the long term.”

The new facility will be engineered to meet the evolving needs of the mining industry. Corcoran said the space will be double the existing workshop capacity and feature modernized services, including dedicated electrification capabilities and battery electric vehicle (BEV) infrastructure.
The space will sustain 400 existing jobs and lead to the creation of 60 new jobs.
“There’s going to be some jobs — and the right jobs,” he said.
Comes at a great time
“I’m talking about technical jobs. Obviously, administrative functions, but certainly a lot of expertise in technology. So we’re going to be looking for in the coming 24 months.”
Vic Fedeli, Ontario’s minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, said the announcement couldn’t come at a better time, given current trade dynamics.
“It’s a really important signal that Ontario has what the world needs,” Fedeli said.
“We visited Sandvik in Sweden — we’ve been in Sweden twice in the last year, pushing for this kind of announcement.”
Work on the new facility has already begun. Corcoran said the facility will be fully operational near the end of 2027.
