Ford Motor Company is recalling approximately 144,000 Ford F-150 vehicles in Canada.

The recall affects 2015-17 model year vehicles equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions.

“On affected vehicles, degradation of the electrical connections in the internal transmission lead frame can cause an intermittent signal from the transmission range sensor,” a Ford spokesperson told CTV News. “This may lead to an unexpected downshift into a lower gear while the vehicle is in motion.”

The spokesperson said Ford has outlined several solutions to address the issue, including having dealers update the model’s Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software. Ford says the update will include “enhanced logic to detect hardware failures and prevent the transmission from commanding an unintended downshift.”

Additionally, Ford will replace the transmission lead frame on any vehicles that have exhibited “specific diagnostic trouble codes related to this sensor, prior to the software installation.”

These changes will come at no cost to the affected customers, Ford says.

Drivers can check if their vehicles are included in the recall by entering their VIN on the company’s webpage.
