Hyundai has announced a recall for thousands of hybrid vehicles in Canada because a component in the hybrid system could overheat and increase the risk of a fire.
The recall notice, posted by Transport Canada on May 14 and updated May 28, said a problem in the hybrid power control unit, or HPCU, could cause the unit to overheat.
The notice warned the issue could prevent the vehicle from starting or cause it to enter a reduced-power mode while the malfunction indicator lamp is illuminated.
“An HPCU that overheats can create a fire risk,” the recall said.
The recall affects 6,082 vehicles in Canada, including Hyundai Elantra hybrid models from the 2024, 2025 and 2026 model years.

A similar recall in the United States affects 54,337 vehicles.
Hyundai said owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a dealership for a software update to the HPCU.
Owners can also check whether their vehicle is included in the recall through Hyundai Canada’s recall lookup tool at Hyundai Canada Recall Lookup.
