Honda Canada is recalling more than 32,000 Odyssey vehicles across Canada due to issues with the display of the rear-view image. A similar recall in the U.S. has affected more than 300,000 vehicles.

The automotive manufacturer shared a release on Wednesday stating that the recall affects 32,289 Odyssey minivans from the 2018-20 model years.

According to the release, water can enter the rear-view camera assembly and cause the printed circuit board (PCB) to corrode. This can result in the rear-view camera image failing to display when the vehicle is put in reverse.

Failure to display would reduce the driver’s rearward visibility and increase the risk of a crash or injury, the release stated.

The defect was caused by an assembly error, involving the use of a mounting screw and the rear-view camera housing boss hole, the release stated. The specification for the hole was inadequate for the screw.

“Due to variations in the positioning of the housing on the assembly jig, the mounting screw is susceptible to being misaligned during assembly,” the release stated.

This could create cracks in parts of the rear camera through which water could enter, it added.

While the vehicle is no longer in production, registered owners of all current vehicles will be contacted by mail starting in August and will be asked to take their vehicle to an authorized Honda dealer. The dealer will replace the rear-view camera with an improved part, the release stated.

The remedy components will be produced by Sony, it added.

The automotive manufacturer’s U.S. unit, Honda Motor America, is also recalling 325,588 Odyssey vehicles in the U.S. for the same issue, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Wednesday.

Registered owners can determine if their specific vehicles are included in the recall by visiting www.Honda.ca/recalls, or by calling 1-888-946-6329.
