OKOTOKS — Trucking and logistics company Mullen Group Ltd. reported a second-quarter profit of $36 million, up from $25.6 million a year ago, as its revenue rose more than 10 per cent.

The company says the profit amounted to 37 cents per diluted share for the quarter ended June 30, up from 28 cents per diluted share a year earlier.

Revenue totalled $609.3 million for the quarter, up from $540.9 million in the same quarter last year.

The company says the increase in revenue was helped by acquisitions and higher fuel surcharge revenue.

On an adjusted basis, Mullen Group says it earned 41 cents per share in its latest quarter, up from 21 cents per share a year earlier.

Murray Mullen, chair and senior executive officer, says there is growing evidence, from recent economic reports and the company’s second-quarter results, that the Canadian economy has finally gained some traction.

“We are encouraged by the discussions we have had with customers across our vast network,” Mullen said in a statement.

“There is more optimism today, particularly in those sectors of the economy that invest in capital goods, which typically translates into increased demand for services and creates good high-paying jobs for Canadians.”
