Looking for a job in Canada? These provinces have the most openings

A new Manulife Canada Wellness report says productivity losses now add up to the equivalent of 46 working days per employee each year.

There were three unemployed people for every vacant job in Canada in March, as overall vacancies dropped by 16,500 year-over-year.

That’s according to Statistics Canada’s most recent report, published Thursday, which found a drop in vacant positions despite gains in waste management and information sectors. Open positions also rose in manufacturing, which added 4,500 vacancies, and wholesale trade, which added 2,200, compared to the same month last year.

But gains in those sectors were outmatched by receding vacancies elsewhere, including in health care (-11,900) and construction (-7,000) and the arts (-1,700).

Weekly earnings increase

Meanwhile, weekly earnings rose 3.5 per cent compared to last year.

Canadians earned $1,333 per week on average, according to the report, and worked around 33 hours per week.

Payroll employment, meaning the number of employees receiving pay and benefits from their employer fell slightly (0.2 per cent) compared to February.
