Prime Minister Mark Carney, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and U.S. President Donald Trump privately met in Washington, D.C., according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The three of them spoke without staff present, the PMO added. Earlier today, they participated in the FIFA World Cup draw at the John F. Kennedy Center and sat together during the event.
Trump, speaking to reporters prior to the draw, said the three of them would discuss immigration and trade.
A spokesperson to the prime minister confirmed to CTV News that Carney “had many occasions for constructive discussions” with both presidents.
“In their principal discussion, the three leaders met for approximately 45 minutes and they’ve agreed to keep working together on CUSMA.”
They met as the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) is up for a formal review in 2026.
In a press conference on Wednesday, Trump said the U.S. will “either let [the agreement] expire or work out another deal with Mexico and Canada,” adding the two countries “have taken advantage of the United States.”
“It’s like just about every other country, in all fairness, it’s not them. I’m not blaming them. But every country because we had stupid people running our country,” Trump said.
According to the deal, the agreement terminates after 16 years, though a country may withdraw from the deal with six months’ notice.
During Carney’s last visit to D.C. in October, Trump was full of praises for the prime minister, calling him a “strong leader.”
“He is a world-class leader. He is a man that knows what he wants, and I’m not surprised to see that he won the election … he’s a good man, he does a good job, but he’s a tough negotiator,” Trump said during a bilateral press conference.
