REGINA -- Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall says there is reason to hope the new U.S. president will be good for Canada.

Wall says in a statement that Canada must work with president-elect Donald Trump in the best interests of both countries.

He says Trump made some election promises that could be positive for Canada, such as his support for the Keystone XL pipeline.

Wall says he hopes Trump will reconsider his plan to end the North American Free Trade Agreement.

He says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should reach out to the new administration as soon as possible to discuss both issues.

Wall added Canada should also reconsider its plan to bring in a carbon tax since it's clear there won't be one in the United States any time soon.

"A proposed carbon tax was on the ballot in one of the more liberal states, Washington state, and it was rejected by 58 per cent of the voters," he said.

"So it makes no sense for our federal government to push ahead with imposing a national carbon tax, when our biggest trading partner -- and our biggest competitor for investment and jobs -- is not going to have one."
