MARKET OUTLOOK

While North American stock markets are at all-time highs, not all stocks are following in step. Since the U.S. election, for example, the big movers in the U.S. have been financials, oil & gas and industrials, while consumer discretionary, healthcare and technology firms have lagged. And with markets trading at expensive valuations (the S&P 500 Index trades at 21 times earnings or 25 times before extraordinary items), it’s important for investors to be nimble when allocating their capital. It’s always prudent to have some cash on the sidelines, especially if the market weakens after Inauguration Day in the United States as it’s known to do.

As market contrarians, we believe that Europe currently offers better value than North America, trading at a 15 per cent discount to North American valuations. While the macro fear in Europe is about politics and future right-wing regimes, the European companies we own have no more than 40 per cent of their revenues generated within the Continent. And with a falling euro and British Pound, their 2017 earnings should be boosted by the weaker currencies.
