Canada's ambassador to the United States is leaving his post in Washington for the private sector at the end of August.
“This is not a decision I have taken quickly, or lightly,” David MacNaughton said in a statement Thursday.
“I had long planned to complete my work ahead of the fall election, particularly following the lifting of steel and aluminum tariffs – something I was absolutely determined we would get done before I left this job, and Congress’s rising for the summer.”
MacNaughton has been in the role since 2016 and played a major role in renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement.
“It is with great affection and gratitude – and of course, considerable regret – that I have accepted Ambassador David MacNaughton’s decision to leave Washington. D.C., at summer’s end, to return to his home in Toronto, and take up new challenges in the private sector,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement Thursday.
Kirsten Hillman will become Canada's acting ambassador to the United States. She has served as deputy ambassador since 2017.
