Disney to close Disneyland resort as virus spreads in California

Walt Disney Co. is closing the Disneyland resort in California on Saturday through the end of month, a response to the spread of coronavirus in the most-populous U.S. state.

The move follows California Governor Gavin Newsom’s executive order banning gatherings of more than 250 people. Theme parks, casinos and movie theaters were excluded from some of the rules, the governor said Thursday. Newsom said he spoke with Disney Executive Chairman Bob Iger the previous day.

“After carefully reviewing the guidelines of the governor of California’s executive order and in the best interest of our guests and employees, we are proceeding with the closure of Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure,” the company said in a statement.

Company hotels will remain open until Monday, Disney said, and its Downtown Disney shopping area will be available to the public. The company will continue to pay park employees during the closure.

“Disney made the right call in the interest of public health and agreed to shut down their California parks,” Newsom said in a separate statement.

Disney, the world’s largest theme-park operator, has already closed its parks in Asia. The company’s Shanghai resort had a limited opening of some non-theme-park operations this week.

Disney said there have been no reported cases of the coronavirus at Disneyland, which is located in Anaheim, California.

Although Disneyland occasionally closes because it reaches capacity, it’s rare for the park to shut down entirely.

Disneyland Paris suspended parades and character meet and greets for a month, while limiting attendance in theaters in accordance with government issued guidelines, the company said. Three Disneyland Paris employees tested positive for the virus, according to numerous news outlets in Europe.
