One of the country’s top grocery executives is aiming to ease Canadians’ concerns over the supply of food and essential items in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It won’t be business as usual. But, you will be able to count on us,” Loblaw Co. Ltd. Executive Chairman Galen G. Weston said in an open letter Monday.

While acknowledging images circulating on social media of empty store shelves and frantic shoppers, Weston said Loblaw isn’t running low on food or essentials and vowed that his stores will remain open.

“Do not worry,” he wrote. “We are not running out of food or essential supplies. Our supply chain and store teams are responding to the spikes in volume and quickly getting the most important items back on the shelf.”

He added volumes are already starting to normalize, and aside from a few items, like hand sanitizer, stores are catching up with restocking shelves.

He also said the company would not increase prices during the pandemic and that the company’s stores will remain open.
