(Bloomberg) --

The fatalities from novel coronavirus infection in Indonesia jumped to 78, the most in Southeast Asia, as the world’s fourth-most populous nation continues to see a surge in fresh cases.

The total number of people infected by Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, rose to 893 on Thursday from 790 a day earlier, Achmad Yurianto, a government spokesman for the coronavirus task force said in Jakarta. The number of new infections topped 100 for a third consecutive day.

Indonesia, which didn’t report any coronavirus infection until the first week of March, has closed schools, pubs, cinemas and other entertainment spots in capital Jakarta to prevent the spread of the disease that’s killed more than 20,000 people worldwide. The Greater Jakarta area, home to almost 30 million people, account for more than two third of the infections and deaths in the archipelago.
