Management frames agriculture as a long game but expects a significant number of milestones over the next 12 to 18 months as it works to get commercial products into the field.

Jim Gordon: Hi, I’m Jim Gordon, and you’re watching Market One Minute. Joining us is Colin Bletsky. He is the COO and Director of MustGrow Biologics. Colin, welcome.
Colin Bletsky: Thanks, Jim. Thanks for having me.
Jim Gordon: Quite welcome, sir. Tell our viewers a bit about MustGrow Biologics.
Colin Bletsky: MustGrow Biologics is an agricultural biotechnology company based out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. We focus our efforts on the sustainable global agricultural market, trying to help farmers replace or complement their synthetic chemistries and fertilizers. Our technologies are based on utilizing compounds that come from nature, taking those specific compounds, putting them in different formulations, and applying a product that a farmer can use to help improve yields, manage diseases, manage nematodes, and produce more food with less.
Jim Gordon: Colin, talk a bit more about that technology. I find this fascinating. Is this really the main thing that separates you from other traditional agricultural solutions?
Colin Bletsky: We extract compounds that nature has given us. These are things that have been incorporated into mustard seeds. They are in broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and essentially any specific brassica that’s out there. We focus on mustard because it has the highest level of the specific compounds that we need. These compounds, when put together, have a very good effect on the soil and the soil microbiome. They help a plant withstand a lot of stresses to produce more yield.
Colin Bletsky: If you look at the synthetic agricultural market, it’s a $380 billion market. It’s massive. But you have synthetic chemicals and synthetic fertilizers in that space, and in most cases, those products are having a major negative impact on the soil. As a farmer, you need something that’s going to work consistently. That’s what sets us apart. Over the years of trials and data, working with companies like Bayer, we’ve been able to show levels of efficacy that are equivalent to synthetic chemicals.
Colin Bletsky: Now, with TerraSante™ showing those levels of efficacy versus synthetic fertilizers, I would say we have a positive impact on the soil and soil microbiome based on what we’ve been seeing in the marketplace. It all comes down to efficacy. It comes down to the yield. It comes down to how the product works. When I look at what our technologies are, you’re taking food-grade materials that nature has given us in an organic way and being able to replace some of the products used to date.
Jim Gordon: What are you hearing back from growers in the field, literally, about your brand and your product?
Colin Bletsky: Over the past number of years, we have seen a lot of use in the field across the North American market, both commercially and in more of an R&D, large-scale setting. What we’re consistently seeing in the field, and what has been noted by not only growers but also professional agronomists, is the benefit within the soil after continued use and the positive impact on the soil microbiome. All of this relates to a healthier root system and a healthier plant. At the end of the day, it’s more yield.
Colin Bletsky: When we look at what we’ve done in potatoes across the Pacific Northwest of the U.S., and what we’ve done in strawberries and leafy greens in the California market, it has been pretty consistent. Yields are higher, and quality seems to be impacted in a positive way. Being a farmer myself, that’s what it all comes down to: producing food, having a good, stable soil system, and making more money at the end of the day.
Jim Gordon: Colin, just a sidebar. You mentioned being a farmer. You really do know of what you speak. You grew up in Saskatchewan on a third-generation farm and received your degree in agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan. Does that add more relevance or relatability when you are literally in the field, pardon the pun, talking to these farmers?
Colin Bletsky: Selfishly, Jim, I’m going to say that I am always very proud of my background. I’m very proud of my expertise, where I went, and what I’ve done. I was from a farm. I bought my first piece of farmland when I was 14 and continued to be involved in the family farm. When I look at my experience, I went through the retail system, so I know what distribution companies are thinking about. I worked with Syngenta Crop Protection for almost 10 years, so I know the chemical side of the business. I then went on to lead the Novozymes global sustainable agriculture business for 10 years, where I really got my feet wet in the biological sustainable agriculture space across the globe.
Colin Bletsky: Bringing that experience back to MustGrow, I always have to put it in this sense: if I wouldn’t use a product on my own farm, I’m not going to want to sell it. I always try to bring that farm mentality, relationships, agronomics, and those aspects back into what we do.
Jim Gordon: Let’s talk about your relationship with Bayer. You received a milestone payment from them under your agreement. What does that say about the progression of the partnership? Talk about how important it is to have them advancing your technology in markets like Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
Colin Bletsky: Bayer has been a tremendous partner. Being a large organization, taking the leap of faith to work with us and put their money where their mouth is to drive our technology has been key. When I look at what they’ve done and continue to do, they would not have continued to invest without seeing the efficacy of our product. I talked about that before: the efficacy. We see great levels of control within our technology.
Colin Bletsky: I think Bayer taking this forward in an area like Europe, the Middle East, and Africa is no small undertaking. It’s a significant amount of investment, a lot of work, and a lot of data, trials, and other things that are needed. Bayer is committed to doing that. It’s been a great partnership. I really look forward to the next number of years working with them, getting to that next milestone level, and getting a product into the field and to the commercialization stage.
Jim Gordon: Looking ahead for investors, what should they look for over the next 12 months?
Colin Bletsky: One of the key aspects for us is that we are now moving towards more continuous production methodologies with our two facilities, one in India and one in Thailand. Our CEO and production advisor are in Asia right now, working with our two manufacturing facilities. To me, it’s about making sure we have enough product. We’re also testing in other markets. We’re testing in the Netherlands and Australia, and we’ll be testing in Brazil later this year.
Colin Bletsky: We are hopeful that we’ll have our Canadian registration coming up very quickly on that product as well. It’s going to be a busy year. There’s a lot on the go. Agriculture is more of a long game and it has a lot of impact, but we do see a significant number of milestones that we hope to hit over the next 12 to 18 months.
