Former federal cabinet minister and Alberta premier Jim Prentice has died in a plane crash near Kelowna, B.C. He was 60 years old.

The Transportation Safety Board says all four people on board the small plane died.

Prentice was a prominent cabinet minister in Stephen Harper's Conservative government, heading several portfolios including Indian affairs, industry and environment.

From 2014 to 2015, Prentice served as Alberta premier but quit politics last May after the Alberta NDP swept the Progressive Conservatives from power.

Here's how politicians and business leaders are reacting to Prentice's tragic death:

Joe Oliver, Former Finance Minister:  I did not actually work with him. However, I did get to know him and benefitted from his help in my campaign. I admired his devotion and accomplishments as a principled politician who cared deeply about his country and his province.

Victor Dodig, CIBC President and CEO: “This news comes as a terrible shock to all of us ... Jim was a great friend, colleague and Canadian. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jim’s wife, Karen, and their children and extended family.”

A spokesperson for BCE (where Prentice previously served on the company's board): “It is with great sadness that we learned today of the passing of former BCE Board member Jim Prentice. Our thoughts are with Jim's family, friends and colleagues.”

Brian Ferguson, President & Chief Executive Officer, Cenovus Energy: I was deeply saddened to hear of the plane crash that claimed the lives of four people, including former Alberta premier Jim Prentice. My condolences go out to Jim’s family and to the families of everyone else who was on board.

Jim Prentice was a great Albertan and Canadian. He was also a good personal friend of mine. Jim viewed public service as among the highest of callings. Throughout his career in federal and provincial politics, as an MP, a cabinet minister and a premier, he dedicated his life to making our province and our country a better place for everyone. He will be sorely missed.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne: Like all Canadians, I am shocked and saddened today by the news that a tragic accident took the life of Jim Prentice and three others last night. Jim Prentice was an ardent Albertan, a patriotic Canadian and a devoted and accomplished public servant. His open and collaborative approach always displayed an inspiring commitment to the people he served. Though it will do little to ease the pain of his sudden passing, his legacy is one of which his family, loved ones and colleagues can be proud. My heart goes out to Karen and the entire Prentice family today, and to all the families affected by this tragedy, as they grieve the senseless loss of their loved ones.
