Top Picks: Berkshire Hathaway, CP Kansas City Rail, Peyto Exploration

MARKET OUTLOOK:

The U.S. market is seeing some chop, mostly based on profit-taking on the overbought tech, artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor play.

On my BNN appearance last month, I noted we were holding near 25 per cent cash in our equity platforms due to a “high risk” indication on our quantitative risk/reward “Bear-O-Meter” model.

We currently are focused on energy, value, and hard assets. Regarding energy - despite its recent weakness, we feel that energy shortages by AI-related power demand, along with the longer termed effects of the Iran war.

The rebuilding of infrastructure, the backlog even if the Strait re-opens soon, the refilling of SPR’s, and the future risk premiums of transporting through the Strait all suggest that a floor for WTIC should be US$80 even in selloffs.

As such, we see good profitability in the sector including Canadian names.

Overall, the month of June can be a bit choppy, and we anticipate deploying cash as this chop offers opportunities.

TOP PICKS:

Keith Richards's Top Picks: Berkshire Hathaway, CP Kansas City Rail & Peyto Exploration Keith Richards, president and chief portfolio manager at ValueTrend Wealth Management, shares his top stock picks to watch in the market.

Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B NYSE)

U.S.: A value play. We feel that the market has already started rotating into value, overlooked, defensive names. Berkshire Hathaway is coming off of the bottom of a trading range.

CP Kansas City Rail (CP TSX)

Value name, breaking out technically.

Peyto Exploration (PEY TSX)

We have owned this one for quite a while (two years). Any time it pulls back to its very strong trendline tends to be opportunistic, now is one of those times. Canadian oil and gas producer.
