S&P/TSX composite down 300 points Wednesday morning

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was down more than 300 points in late-morning trading on Wednesday, driven by weakness in financial and basic material stocks, while U.S. markets also fell.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 331.66 points at 35,418.04.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 817.30 points at 51,930.02. The S&P 500 index was down 53.10 points at 7,375.68, while the Nasdaq composite was down 227.92 points at 24,649.00.

The Canadian dollar traded for 70.98 cents US compared with 70.91 cents on Tuesday.

The September crude oil contract was up US$5.95 at US$85.21 per barrel.

The August gold contract was down US$31.70 at US$4,007.00 an ounce.
