S&P/TSX composite up more than 200 points, U.S. stock markets mixed

TORONTO — Gains in the technology and base metals sectors helped Canada’s main stick index rise more than 200 points in late-morning trading, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 219.34 points at 36,228.74.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 248.22 points at 51,800.61. The S&P 500 index was up 0.56 points at 7,765.26, while the Nasdaq composite was up 110.62 points at 27,232.71.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.08 cents US compared with 71.32 cents US on Monday.

The November crude oil contract was down US$1.11 at US$91.26 per barrel.

The December gold contract was down US$8.30 at US$4,375.60 an ounce.
