TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was up nearly 200 points in late-morning trading, helped by strength in the utility and financial sectors, while U.S. stock markets also gained ground.
The S&P/TSX composite index was up 187.13 points at 35,705.68.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 385.15 points at 51,653.05. The S&P 500 index was up 68.84 points at 7,842.79, while the Nasdaq composite was up 238.54 points at 27,715.85.
The Canadian dollar traded for 70.30 cents US compared with 70.16 cents US on Monday.
The November crude oil contract was down US$1.53 at US$87.90 per barrel.
The December gold contract was up US$31.20 at US$4,188.00 an ounce.
