TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was down more than 600 points in late-morning trading, weighed down by losses in the base metal, financial and industrial sectors, while U.S. stock markets also fell.
The S&P/TSX composite index was down 615.69 points at 35,033.82.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 555.59 points at 50,965.69. The S&P 500 index was down 44.35 points at 7,774.58, while the Nasdaq composite was down 168.05 points at 27,431.74.
The Canadian dollar traded for 70.14 cents US compared with 70.29 cents US on Tuesday.
The November crude oil contract was up eight cents US at US$89.52 per barrel.
The December gold contract was down US$56.70 at US$4,130.40 an ounce.
