S&P/TSX composite down despite energy sector strength as oil tops US$90 a barrel

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was down in late-morning trading despite strength in the energy sector as the price of oil rose to top US$90 per barrel.

The November crude oil contract was up US$4.72 at US$93.00 per barrel.

The move came as the S&P/TSX composite index was down 41.98 points at 34,999.88.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 236.74 points at 50,943.13. The S&P 500 index was down 30.10 points at 7,771.67, while the Nasdaq composite was down 143.17 points at 27,395.52.

The Canadian dollar traded for 70.26 cents US compared with 70.14 cents US on Wednesday.

The December gold contract was up US$4.00 at US$4,144.70 an ounce.
