S&P/TSX composite up nearly 100 points in late-morning trading

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index looked to regain some of its recent losses as it rose nearly 100 points in late-morning trading, helped by strength in the financial and telecommunication sectors.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 90.04 points at 35,915.77 after falling nearly 450 points on Tuesday.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 312.18 points at 53,079.06. The S&P 500 index was up 45.44 points at 7,676.91, while the Nasdaq composite was up 129.36 points at 26,229.13.

The Canadian dollar traded for 72.24 cents US compared with 71.96 cents US on Tuesday.

The October crude oil contract was up 39 cents US at US$90.61 per barrel.

The December gold contract was up US$28.90 at US$4,425.30 an ounce.
