(Bloomberg) -- New York State reported more than 300 deaths from Covid-19 in the past day, pushing overall fatalities above 1,500 -- or roughly half of all U.S. deaths from the pandemic.

Governor Andrew Cuomo gave the new figures Tuesday at his daily coronavirus news conference. He said confirmed cases of the virus had increased to about 76,000, up roughly 9,300 from a day earlier. About 11,000 people are hospitalized, up more than 1,400, and 2,700 are in intensive care, up more than 350.

He said the apex of the crisis in New York was still at least 14 days away.

As Cuomo was giving his remarks, CNN announced that Chris Cuomo, a CNN anchor and the governor’s brother, had tested positive for Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

The governor has given regular interviews to his brother since the outbreak began, often tinged with brotherly ribbing.

On Chris Cuomo’s condition, the governor said: “He is going to be fine. He’s young, in good shape, strong -- not as strong as he thinks -- but he will be fine.”
