(Bloomberg) -- Singapore will offer Covid-19 tests for travelers to China prior to departure, in an effort to align with new Chinese requirements aimed at stemming the growing number of imported virus cases.

Testing will be made available between August 28 and August 31 at a dedicated screening center in the city-state, according to a joint government ministry statement. Passengers will then be informed of their results within 48 hours and must test negative in order to embark on their journeys. Each test will cost S$186.

The new travel rules were instituted after China earlier registered dozens of passengers arriving from the Singapore who tested positive for the coronavirus. In response, the world’s second largest economy had temporarily suspended a number of flights from Singapore as a precautionary measure.

The Southeast Asian country was one of the first to establish a green lane agreement for essential business travel with China but the new requirements have underscored the fragility of travel corridors intended to boost economic activity and revive the aviation industry.

More than 700 passengers have been tested at the center since Tuesday, according to the statement. Passengers scheduled to travel to China from September 1 must approach either the trade, health or manpower ministries for assistance with arranging pre-departure tests.
