Suspect in Vienna Renoir Landscape Heist Caught in Amsterdam
Bloomberg News
,(Bloomberg) -- One of a trio of suspected robbers who stole an Auguste Renoir painting from Austrian auction house Dorotheum was caught in Amsterdam, according to a spokeswoman for the Vienna prosecutors’ office.
The Ukrainian man was arrested a few days ago, spokeswoman Nina Bussek said. Austria has requested his extradition, she added, declining to elaborate.
The trio made off with Renoir’s coastal landscape “Golfe, Mer, Falaises Vertes” -- estimated to be worth between 120,000 euros ($136,000) and 160,000 euros -- on Nov. 26. The painting had been on display in the Dorotheum ahead of an auction planned for two days later.
