Tim Hortons is offering up an early look at its first store in China, and the decor is distinctively Canadian.

The maple leaf is prominently displayed inside the Shanghai store that's scheduled to open on Feb. 26.

It will be the coffee and doughnut chain's first foray into China as part of an ambitious expansion strategy. Tim Hortons announced last July it was partnering up with Cartesian Capital Group to open more than 1,500 restaurants in China over a 10-year period.

“China’s population and vibrant economy represent an excellent growth opportunity for Tim Hortons in the coming years," said Tim Hortons President Alex Macedo at the time. "We have already seen Canada’s Chinese community embrace Tim Hortons and we now have the opportunity to bring the best of our Canadian brand to China with established partners who have expertise in the industry and the country.”

The expansion plan hasn't been thrown off-stride by the recent tension between Canada and China that was triggered by the arrest of Huawei Technologies Co. chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver last December at the request of American authorities.

Beyond the Canadian flag motif inside the Shanghai store, Tim Hortons is also planning an unabashedly Canadian beverage for its customers in Shanghai: A Maple Macchiato.
