OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney said he spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump Wednesday morning, adding when asked specifically that they discussed “issues around trade.”
With the highly consequential U.S. midterm elections fast approaching and amid a protracted trade war, Canada has yet to reach a new trade deal with the Americans.
“We discussed a wide range of things, wide range of issues, the situation in Iran,” Carney said, when asked by reporters specifically what he discussed with Trump.
“We talked a few days ago about Ukraine and those aspects there,” he added. “We talked about other aspects in the Middle East, and we did address some of the issues around trade.”
Carney made the remarks while taking questions from reporters on Parliament Hill Wednesday alongside Ontario Premier Doug Ford.
The two announced $9 billion for sectors affected by the trade war.
