Tim Hortons teams up with Beyond Meat to test plant-based sausages
Tim Hortons is jumping on the plant-based protein bandwagon.
The coffee-and-doughnut chain announced Wednesday it has partnered with Beyond Meat Inc. to test its meatless breakfast sausage in select markets.
"Canadians are looking to incorporate plant-based options into their diets and we're thrilled to partner with Beyond Meat to test three Beyond Meat Breakfast Sandwiches – including an entirely vegan offering if the market test confirms the potential we see for the platform," Tim Hortons President Alex Macedo said in a release.
Tim Hortons confirmed the products are being tested at 60 Greater Toronto Area restaurants, but would not disclose the exact locations to prevent skewing the results. The company said if the GTA test is successful, the products will be rolled out across all Canadian restaurants by the end of summer.
"A national launch would allow us to further our mission of making delicious plant-based products more readily accessible to Canadians nationwide,” said Ethan Brown, founder and CEO of Beyond Meat, in a release.
The move comes just weeks after Beyond Meat (BYND.O) made its public debut – the most successful IPO since the financial crisis – as demand for plant-based food heats up. Other fast-food chains like A&W Restaurants have also teamed up with Beyond Meat to offer plant-based menu items.
