(Bloomberg) -- The UK’s opposition Labour Party surged to a 25-point lead over the ruling Conservatives in a Savanta ComRes poll on Monday that highlights the damage done to Liz Truss’s Tories by her economic strategy 10 days ago.

While the lead isn’t as great as the record 33-point margin Labour registered in a YouGov poll last week, it’s the first time the party has polled 50% or more in Savanta ComRes’s history, and the biggest gap it’s ever enjoyed over the Tories, the pollster said in an emailed statement.

“If this played out at a general election, the Conservative Party could be pretty much wiped out, and Labour would have such a commanding lead it could put the Conservatives out of power for generations,” Chris Hopkins, political research director at Savanta ComRes, said in the statement.

Labour has now led by large margins in a slew of recent polls conducted in the wake of Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng’s economic package on Sept. 23, which amounted to the biggest set of unfunded tax cuts in half a century.

The plans led to a market rout that sent the pound spiraling to an all-time low versus the dollar and forced the Bank of England to intervene to prevent a crash in the gilt market. They also included an unpopular plan to cut income tax for the UK’s top earners -- which Kwarteng on Monday reversed following days of criticism.

The polling was conducted Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 and showed Labour gained seven points in a week to register 50%, with the Tories slipping four points to 25%.
