GFL Environmental Inc. is expanding its footprint in the United States by acquiring County Waste of Virginia, LLC in a deal expected to close in January, the company said Tuesday.

“The addition of County Waste’s operations to GFL’s existing solid waste business creates an opportunity for us to further expand our eastern U.S. footprint into new markets,” GFL Founder and CEO Patrick Dovigi said in a release.

The news comes one day after the GFL announced it’s looking to raise more than US$1 billion from private markets after it scrapped its plans for an initial public offering last month.

Toronto-based GFL operates across Canada and in 20 states in the U.S.

County Waste offers solid waste management services for municipal, residential, commercial and industrial customers in Virginia and Eastern Pennsylvania.

Financial terms of the agreement were not immediately disclosed.
