(Bloomberg) -- The U.K will charge around 3 million European Union citizens currently living in the country as much as 65 pounds ($85) to stay after Brexit.

The new settlement scheme, announced Thursday by the Home Office, will permit EU citizens and their family members to obtain new U.K. immigration status -- 65 pounds for adults, 32.50 pounds for children. EU nationals will be able to apply online and only from inside the U.K.

Those who already hold permanent residency can apply for free. Officials said that that they hoped the scheme would be open in late summer, but will be fully operational by March 2019 when the U.K. formally leaves the bloc.

EU citizens and their family members who’ve been resident in the U.K. for five years ore more will be eligible for “settled status,” the Home Office said. Otherwise they will get “pre-settled status” allowing them to stay in the U.K. for five years, at which point they can apply for settled status. Both give the same access to healthcare and other benefits.

The U.K.’s statistics office estimates there were 3.8 million EU nationals living in the country in 2017. Those who come to the U.K. by the end of 2020 will have until June 2021 to apply.

The move follows the citizens’ rights agreement with the EU, which guaranteed the rights of EU citizens living in the U.K. and U.K. nationals living in other EU member states.

Earlier, Home Secretary Sajid Javid called on other EU states to publish details on how British nationals living in Europe will be able to secure their status.
