(Bloomberg) -- Nine stores operated by Sears Holdings Corp. that had been on the chopping block will live to see another day after the struggling retailer decided not to shutter the full 72 it had said were slated for closure.

The company, which said Thursday morning that it had identified 100 unprofitable stores, posted a list of 63 locations that will be closing in early September. The list of affected sites includes 15 Kmart stores and 48 Sears sites. The shutdowns affect states across the country, though several big hubs including San Francisco and Washington, D.C., were largely unscathed.

Liquidation sales will begin as early as June 14, the Hoffman Estates, Illinois-based retailer said. A small group of stores that were on the company’s original list were given reprieve and “are being evaluated further,” it said.
