Bill Morneau is heading straight into the oil patch on the eve of a deadline that could determine the Trans Mountain expansion project's fate.

The Calgary Chamber of Commerce announced late Thursday it will host the finance minister on May 30. According to the advisory, Morneau will discuss "investor confidence, business competitiveness, and spurring innovation –  including an update on critical infrastructure" in a speech about "securing Canada's economic future."

He'll be speaking to a room filled with some of the city's top business leaders the day before Kinder Morgan's self-imposed May 31 deadline for clarity on the path forward for its controversial $7.4-billion pipeline.

Kinder Morgan put all non-essential Trans Mountain expansion work on hold last month, warning it will not put any additional shareholder funds at risk without agreements in place to address political bickering between the British Columbia government, Alberta and the federal government.

Since then, Morneau and Alberta Premier Rachel Notley have repeatedly vowed the project will be built. Most recently, Morneau offered to provide indemnification against political risk in B.C. for Kinder Morgan, or any other investor that takes control of the Trans Mountain expansion.

A spokesperson for the finance minister was not immediately available when contacted by BNN Bloomberg for additional information on Morneau's speech.
