The U.S. Supreme Court upheld a New York grand jury subpoena for President Donald Trump’s tax returns and other financial records, rejecting his call to give presidents complete immunity from criminal investigation while in office.

“The president is neither absolutely immune from state criminal subpoenas seeking his private papers nor entitled to a heightened standard of need,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the court. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented in the 7-2 ruling.

The court could rule in a matter of minutes in another Trump subpoena case, involving congressional authority.
