SAN FRANCISCO -- Fitbit is launching a study in Canada and the U.S. to determine whether it can build an algorithm to detect COVID-19 before symptoms start.

The San Francisco, Calif.-based company says its study will use a blend of data already collected from Fitbit users in conjunction with new info they provide.

Fitbit is particularly interested in attracting people who currently have or have had symptoms consistent with COVID-19, but anyone in Canada and the U.S. over 21 can participate.

Participants will be asked about their medical history, demographics, symptoms they have experienced and whether they had or may have COVID-19.

Participation is voluntarily and those involved can withdraw from the study at any time.

Fitbit also hopes it can use the study to determine if data from wearables can help detect the early onset of other infectious diseases like the flu.
