(Bloomberg) -- Ghislaine Maxwell faced the first of her accusers on Tuesday, as “Jane” -- a woman who claims she was sexually abused by Jeffrey Epstein starting at age 14 -- took the stand as a prosecution witness.

Four women who claim they were abused by Epstein as minors are expected to testify at Maxwell’s trial on sex-trafficking charges in Manhattan federal court. The British socialite is accused of “grooming” them for Epstein and participating in some of their abuse herself.

The women have been allowed to testify using pseudonyms given the nature of the charges. Under questioning by prosecutor Alison Moe, Jane said she had sexual contact with Epstein “more than once.” She was also asked if anyone else was in the room when the contact took place.

“Ghislaine Maxwell,” Jane said, pointing to the defendant in the courtroom.

Jane also described the difficult circumstances of her life just before she met Epstein in 1994. Her father died of leukemia the year before. “My father’s employer cancelled his health insurance when he went into the hospital and he ended up dying,” she said.

The prosecution claims that Maxwell and Epstein lured vulnerable young girls into their orbit with their glamorous and luxurious lives. Maxwell would take the girls on shopping trips and make them feel comfortable before encouraging them to give Epstein massages.

Maxwell’s lawyers claim she’s being scapegoated for Epstein’s crimes and that the four women’s memories of events from nearly 30 years ago have been “contaminated” by press accounts and their own desire to receive millions of dollars in compensation from Epstein’s estate.
