(Bloomberg) -- Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving has been fined $50,000 for breaking the NBA’s Covid-19 protocols by attending an indoor party last weekend.

Irving will forfeit salary for any games he misses due to a mandatory five-day quarantine. He can return to team activities on Jan. 16 if he continues to test negative, Byron Spruell, president of league operations, announced Friday.

The NBA’s rules prohibit attending indoor social gatherings of 15 or more people or entering bars, lounges, clubs or similar establishments.

The league has struggled to contain the virus. Less than a month into the new season 10 games have been postponed and 16 players have tested positive since Jan. 6.

Irving has missed five consecutive games for personal reasons, last suiting up on Jan. 5 against the Utah Jazz.

When Irving does return, it will be for a new look Nets. Brooklyn traded for James Harden to create the NBA’s latest “super team” during Irving’s absence. But Irving will have something in common with his new teammate, Harden was fined $50,000 for violating Covid protocols in December.
