(Bloomberg) -- Shanghai will lock down a southwestern district on Saturday morning to conduct a mass Covid testing drive, its first major movement restriction since the financial hub exited a bruising two-month crisis earlier this month.

The mini-lockdown is raising concerns that the city’s reopening is backsliding as officials fear a rebound in cases. While the plan is to seal the Minhang district of 2.65 million only for Saturday morning, residents face the risk of being confined to their homes for another two weeks if any infections are discovered.

While most of Shanghai residents have been moving freely about since the start of the June, hundreds of thousands remain under varying degrees of restrictions. Officials lock down compounds again if new infections are found among residents and various districts have regularly conducted mass testing exercises.

The city reported nine local infections for Wednesday, including five asymptomatic and four local confirmed cases, according to a statement from the local health commission.

The Minhang mass test and lockdown plan are aimed at “consolidating the achievements of the city’s epidemic prevention and control, and dynamically discovering and controlling epidemic risks,” the statement said.
